Greenville, Mississippi, has introduced an innovative recycling program aimed at boosting aluminum can recovery and reducing landfill waste. In collaboration with Every Can Counts U.S. and Replenysh, the city has established the state’s first Cans for Cash Circularity Center. This facility, located at 1512 US-82, is a self-sustaining recycling hub that offers digital payouts for recycled aluminum beverage cans.
The Greenville Circularity Center is only the second of its kind nationwide and marks a significant milestone for Mississippi. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative (MRCTI) to support communities along the Mississippi River that lack traditional recycling services.
Participants in the program can earn $0.30 per pound for their clean, empty aluminum beverage cans. The site employs a digital payment system, providing options for receipts and transfers via gift card, PayPal, or direct deposit. While the facility also accepts PET 1 plastic bottles for recycling, only aluminum cans are eligible for payment.
Scott Breen, Senior Vice President of Sustainability at the Can Manufacturers Institute, commended the project, describing it as an “impact-driven program” that effectively combines community involvement and technology to enhance aluminum recycling efforts. “On Earth Day, we celebrate this innovative model that delivers real environmental and economic benefits,” he stated.
Revenue generated from aluminum collected at the center will be reinvested into community programs, further benefiting Greenville residents.
Mark Armen, Founder and CEO of Replenysh, highlighted the initiative’s commitment to providing equitable access to recycling infrastructure.
