Mississippi State University has appointed Brian O’Connor as the new head baseball coach, following an announcement from the university’s athletics department on Sunday night. The decision comes on the heels of the Bulldogs’ recent defeat to Florida State in the NCAA Regional, which concluded their postseason journey.
O’Connor arrives at Mississippi State after a successful tenure with the Virginia Cavaliers. Under his leadership, Virginia secured its first NCAA national title in 2015. Throughout his 22 years with the Cavaliers, he guided the team to seven College World Series appearances and 14 consecutive NCAA tournament qualifications, earning 10 NCAA Regional titles along the way.
Brandon Langlois, the senior associate athletic director for Communications and Creative, stated that Coach O’Connor will be formally introduced at a public welcome event. The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT on Thursday at Dudy Noble Field.
O’Connor takes over from Chris Lemonis, who was relieved of his duties earlier in the season.
