Byram’s K9 officer, Zeus, is set to receive enhanced protection thanks to a generous donation from the non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. In approximately ten weeks, Zeus will be outfitted with a bullet and stab-resistant vest, a gift sponsored by Mari Deese from Norco, California. The vest will bear the inscription, “In memory of Hyde,” honoring a German Shepherd mix who passed away in January. Hyde was cherished by Deese’s friend as a loyal and beloved member of the family.
Established in 2009, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charity dedicated to providing protective gear and support to law enforcement dogs across the United States. The organization’s vests are made in the U.S., custom-fitted, and certified by the National Institute of Justice. Since its founding, the charity has distributed over 6,120 vests, valued at $6.9 million, to K9 officers in all 50 states, funded by private and corporate donations.
Eligibility for the vest program is extended to U.S. law enforcement dogs aged 20 months or older who are actively employed and certified. K9s with expired vests may also apply. With an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s nationwide, the organization encourages tax-deductible contributions of any amount, noting that a $1,050 donation will sponsor a single vest. Each vest is valued at $1,800, weighs between four and five pounds, and includes a five-year warranty.
