As the New Year begins, many set out to achieve fresh goals and shed old habits. For women enrolled in the Renewal House Program at Hope Haven Ministries, this season marks a chance at transformation—a path from brokenness to wholeness.

“It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” said Maria Torres, a participant in the program. In November, the 42-year-old Jackson Heights native joined other Hope Haven members in preparing Thanksgiving meal packages for families in need.

Torres’s journey to the Renewal House began after a turbulent relationship left her homeless. The year-long, faith-based residential program is designed to help women struggling with addiction, homelessness, or abuse. Some, like Torres, arrive voluntarily, while others participate as part of a court mandate.

“There are routines and responsibilities we have to follow every day, and that’s just part of life here,” Torres explained. “If you stick with it, things will work out. But it takes discipline, and that’s not easy.”

Currently, nearly 30 women reside at the Renewal House, where they attend daily Bible study, share in household chores, and adhere to a structured schedule meant to instill discipline and stability.

Program director Angela Brooks, 45, knows the challenges firsthand. After decades battling substance abuse, she entered the program herself before taking on a leadership role. “I used to say my probation officer sent me, but I believe God sent me,” Brooks said. “For many of us, this program means everything. We learn what it means to be forgiven, to be loved by Christ, and to be part of a supportive community.”

After completing six months in the program, residents can move into an internship track, developing outreach and leadership skills. The program also offers job placement assistance to help women reintegrate into the workforce. Torres, now halfway through her year, looks forward to securing employment and starting anew. “I just want to get back on my feet and rebuild my life,” she said.

Hope Haven Ministries operates a similar program for men and provides weekly food assistance to over 300 families in the community.
