Innovations in robotic surgery systems are rapidly changing the landscape of medical procedures and patient recovery times. At Metro Health Center in Greenville, the introduction of the latest robotic system, the SurgiBot X, has enabled surgeons to perform operations with enhanced precision, leading to faster patient recovery.
The SurgiBot X allows surgeons to guide robotic instruments using their hands, offering a 4K high-definition view and advanced tools that measure the exact amount of force applied during surgery.
“With 3D visualization and now the capability to monitor force on the instruments, we can perform minimally invasive surgeries at a console with almost the same accuracy as traditional open procedures,” explained Dr. Jessica Monroe, a surgical oncologist at Metro Health Center.
The robotic system is utilized for a wide range of procedures, from gynecological and thoracic surgeries to prostate operations.
Dr. Monroe noted that the system’s recording functions and data analytics improve surgical efficiency. It also provides valuable training opportunities for residents and enhances communication among medical staff both in and outside the operating room.
“The system’s app enables me to observe surgeries remotely, even from my phone or office. I can see exactly what the operating surgeon is seeing and offer real-time advice or insights,” said Dr. Monroe.
Patients benefit from the technology through shorter recovery periods, allowing them to return to their daily routines sooner.
Dr. Monroe shared a personal account of her father’s experience. “He underwent adrenal gland removal, a procedure that typically requires an open incision and a four to six week recovery. At over 70 years old, he was back to work in just two weeks. That kind of swift recovery is unprecedented with traditional surgery,” she said.
Dr. Monroe emphasized that while technology is an important tool, the ultimate goal remains delivering high-quality care and helping patients resume their normal lives as quickly as possible.
