The Helping Hands organization hosted its annual soup fundraiser, “Bowls of Hope,” formerly known as the “Soup Celebration,” at the River City Convention Center this week. The event featured an array of soups, including gumbo and chili, with all-you-can-eat servings available to attendees for the price of a $25 ticket.

This year, organizers made the decision to move the event away from the same weekend as the national football championship, hoping to boost attendance numbers.

“We found that holding it on the same day as the big game really hurt our turnout,” said Anna Mitchell, President of the Helping Hands Women’s Auxiliary. “We decided it was better to reschedule to a time when more of the community could join us.”

More than 50 volunteers helped run the event, including culinary students from Eastwood and Lakeshore High Schools. The event also saw participation from several local public figures.

For many volunteers, the event was personally meaningful. “It makes me feel good to give back to the community,” said Lakeshore High culinary student Jasmine Carter. “You see people smiling just from enjoying a simple bowl of soup, and that’s rewarding.”

Proceeds from ticket sales and votes cast during the event will go toward funding emergency shelter and financial assistance for families throughout the River City metro area.

Community leadership also played a pivotal role in the event’s success, attendees noted. “When leaders in the community show up, others follow their example,” said attendee Mary Douglas.

Organizers emphasized that the fundraiser provides both financial and emotional support to those in need. “Events like this help people not just with money, but with compassion,” Douglas said. “Sometimes giving your time means more than giving money, because you can really make a difference in someone’s life.”
