In a dramatic turn of events last month, Canton Firefighter Anthony Walker survived a potentially fatal electrocution while handling a downed tree with a chainsaw. His heart stopped during the incident, but swift action from his fellow firefighters saved his life.
On Monday, the City of Canton held an awards ceremony outside Canton City Hall to honor these courageous first responders. Canton Fire Chief Kenna Pierce recognized the exceptional efforts of Demetrius Flax, Justin Wells, and Andy Devine, alongside the contributions of Canton and Madison County’s emergency services.
Assistant Chief Kelvin Luckett shared an emotional moment, recalling Walker’s condition in the hospital, and emphasized the profound impact of such incidents on the firefighting community.
Chief Pierce extended gratitude to the Gluckstadt Fire Department, particularly Chief Henry Davis, who was the first contact after the accident. Acknowledgments were also given to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department for their logistical support, as well as to the Madison Fire Department, Canton Police Department, Madison County Emergency Management Agency, Farmhaven Fire Department, and Madison County Fire Coordinator Minor Norman.
Despite adverse weather conditions that had previously grounded their unit, Air Care made a crucial flight to assist Walker, earning them a commemorative plaque from Canton. This was especially poignant as they had recently lost a crew in another incident, highlighting their commitment to duty.
Demetrius Flax, the youngest firefighter in Canton, played a critical role by pulling Walker to safety, sustaining a minor shock himself in the process. Justin Wells administered CPR and used a defibrillator, maintaining composure amidst the chaos, which was key to Walker’s survival. Off-duty at the time, Andy Devine responded to the call and aided the lifesaving efforts, demonstrating the dedication of the firefighting community.
In his closing remarks, Chief Pierce expressed heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to the rescue and the public who gathered to honor the bravery and dedication of the emergency responders.
