Dressed in formal attire, community members gathered Sunday night at Renaissance Hall for the “Hope for Tomorrow Gala,” an event organized by the Magnolia Haven Foster Foundation. The evening aimed to raise funds for a new foster care facility planned for the heart of the city.

“The foster home is just the starting point. It’s a foundation for broader community cooperation,” said Jasmine Brooks, founder and director of Magnolia Haven. “This initiative will open the doors to many opportunities and positive changes in our neighborhood.”

Brooks explained that the new facility will serve more than just as temporary housing for children in foster care. It will also offer life skills programs, including employment readiness. “We’re planning to open a community cafe—a fresh produce cafe designed to address the ongoing issue of food deserts in our area,” Brooks said. “This cafe will not only create job opportunities but also provide affordable, nutritious food for seniors and others in need. The children will be involved in preparing and serving the meals, learning valuable skills along the way.”

Attendees at the gala enjoyed an evening of dancing, entertainment, and heartfelt speeches. Several local advocates and former foster care youth shared their personal stories, highlighting the importance and urgent need for support in Mississippi’s foster care system.

“As we share our experiences and raise awareness, we can come together to make a significant impact,” Brooks emphasized.

According to Brooks, more than 4,000 children in Mississippi are currently waiting for foster placement.

To those considering fostering, Brooks offered reassurance. “I encourage anyone interested to look into the process. It’s simpler than many believe,” she said. “We welcome everyone willing to support these children with compassion and without judgment, helping them realize they are deserving of love and opportunity.”

The Magnolia Haven Foster Foundation hopes to open the doors of its new home by May 2026.
