Jackson State University (JSU) students and faculty are making a significant impact in their community by installing Ring doorbells for 150 local residents at no cost. This initiative, in partnership with the Pecan Tree Park neighborhood association, is funded by a $50,000 Home Depot Retool Your School Community Project Grant.

Heather Denne, Ph.D., director of Community Engagement at JSU, expressed gratitude for the grant, emphasizing its role in enhancing neighborhood security. “We’re extremely grateful to have secured the resources from Home Depot to cater to the needs of our community,” Denne stated. “We hope that by having access to the Ring cameras, our neighborhoods surrounding JSU will feel more joy about keeping their properties pristine.”

The project targets residents aged 65 and older within a 10-mile radius of the university. In addition to Pecan Tree Park, other collaborating associations include Gowdy Washington Addition, Jayne Avenue, Matthews Estates, Westland Plaza, Poindexter Park, and The Center for Social Entrepreneurship.

Eighty-one-year-old West Jackson resident Emmitt Powe expressed appreciation for the initiative. “It’s a great help to those who probably can’t afford it. Anything that can help us see what’s going on around us is a real blessing,” Powe said. “It makes me proud, and I appreciate those who decided to make this gift to the senior citizens.”
