The Junior League of Jackson has pledged a $100,000 donation to the Foundation for Mississippi History to aid in the construction of Margaret Ann Crigler Park, a new green space planned for downtown Jackson. The park will be situated next to the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, serving as an extension of the Two Mississippi Museums.
Molly Griffin, President of the Junior League of Jackson, emphasized the organization’s commitment to community improvement, stating that the park will be an innovative outdoor classroom designed to enhance academic growth and support the health and mental well-being of children and youth. The park will feature an open lawn, children’s play area, outdoor stage, and native landscaping, creating a space for families, students, and museum visitors.
The Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) acquired the site, formerly the Eudora Welty Library, in 2024 with plans to transform it into a public park. This initiative aligns with the original city layout from 1822, which envisioned green spaces on alternating blocks. Currently, only Old Capitol Green and Smith Park remain from that initial design.
Katie Blount, Director of MDAH, acknowledged the importance of community support for the project, expressing gratitude for the Junior League of Jackson’s contribution and hoping it will inspire further support to enhance Mississippi’s capital city.
