The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced the closure of two bridges on U.S. Highway 51 between Tithelo Road and Way Road, approximately 8.5 miles north of Canton. This decision follows inspections that uncovered significant deterioration in the timber support structures of the bridges, which are nearly a century old.

The closures are a precautionary measure to avert potential structural failures. MDOT has confirmed that a comprehensive bridge replacement project is underway, with bidding expected to open later this month. The project will involve replacing five bridges in the area, with construction slated to begin this fall.

Key Project Timeline:

  • Fall 2025: Construction commencement
  • Fall 2026: Reopening of the two closed bridges
  • Fall 2028: Completion of the entire bridge replacement project

In a public statement, MDOT acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the closures but emphasized that public safety remains the priority. The department assured that the improvements will significantly enhance access and reliability for residents, businesses, and travelers in the region.

Motorists are advised to plan their journeys in advance, utilize alternate routes, and stay informed through MDOT’s official platforms for updates on construction and detour routes.
