Open Doors Ministries Prepares for Summer Camp Welcoming Over 100 Kids in Oakridge Avenue District

Kids in the historic Oakridge Avenue District are eagerly waiting for the start of summer camp.

Open Doors Ministries is preparing to welcome more than 100 children for weeks filled with learning, games, swimming, and new friendships.

On Thursday, the library inside Open Doors buzzed with activity as volunteers readied supplies and sorted T-shirts for the 110 campers set to arrive. Children ages 5 to 12 will take part in reading and literacy classes, aiming to improve their skills before the next school year.

Among the camp counselors is 19-year-old Sarah Thompson, a nursing student at River Valley College from Greenwood, Mississippi. Thompson said she feels drawn to serve. “I think there’s something here for me to learn as well,” she shared. “Camps like this mean a lot to kids. They get to try new things, make memories, and feel supported every day.”

Staff member Mark Johnson helped prepare lunch for the counselors. Soon, the meals will be for the children. The camp features swimming lessons, basketball, and gym activities. Organizers want every camper to know how to stay safe in the water.

It costs Open Doors Ministries $1,600 per child for the eight-week program. Families able to pay contribute $100 per child, which covers lessons, field trips, swimming, two daily meals, and snacks.

“We only need sponsors for 18 more children,” said co-founder Lisa Monroe. “Sponsorships help ensure every kid gets to participate, no matter their family’s situation. We’re almost there.”

Camp runs from June 8 through July 17.

Open Doors Ministries is asking for donations of reusable ice packs, laundry detergent, swimsuits for children ages 5 to 12, life jackets, towels, sunscreen, goggles, five large water coolers with spouts, and individually wrapped snacks.
