Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced the successful completion of Operation Safe Online Summer, a statewide initiative targeting internet crimes against children. The operation led to 11 arrests and the rescue of one child victim from ongoing abuse.
“With summer break in full swing, children are spending more time online,” stated Attorney General Fitch. “Our office is committed to safeguarding young Mississippians, but parents must also be vigilant about online risks.”
The Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force of Mississippi spearheaded the operation, executing 56 search warrants and issuing 31 subpoenas across state and federal levels. The task force investigated 33 complaints and Cybertips, resulting in the extensive examination of over 16 terabytes of digital data from various devices.
Comprising nearly 90 law enforcement agencies and 145 personnel statewide, the ICAC Task Force plays a crucial role in protecting children from online threats. As part of the operation, the Attorney General’s Office and ICAC affiliates conducted 12 community presentations to educate the public on online safety.
Attorney General Fitch emphasized the importance of early and ongoing discussions about online safety with children. Key topics for families include monitoring digital platforms, enforcing privacy settings, and educating children on the risks of sharing personal information online.
The operation also highlighted the need for increased awareness among middle and high school students about online privacy, body safety, and recognizing signs of potential abuse.
For adolescents and young adults, the campaign advised reinforcing strong online habits, such as using robust passwords and being cautious of scams and phishing schemes.
In 2023, Attorney General Fitch initiated the “Be Aware Before You Share” campaign, aimed at highlighting the impact of social media on children’s mental and physical health. Resources for parents and children regarding internet safety are available on the Attorney General’s website.
