On May 9, quick actions by two Tupelo police officers prevented a potential tragedy near Tupelo High School. Corporal Jon Price and Corporal Jay Marshall were formally recognized for their lifesaving efforts in a recent social media announcement by the Tupelo Police Department.

The incident unfolded around 8:40 a.m. when school staff requested police assistance after a student left the campus and was found sitting on a bridge along Cliff Gookin Boulevard, threatening to jump. Corporal Price and Corporal Marshall, who are School Resource Officers assigned to Tupelo High School, responded promptly to the scene.

Working alongside a school employee, the officers skillfully engaged with the student, gaining her trust and ultimately ensuring her safety. The situation concluded without any injuries or further complications.

A statement from the police department highlighted the successful collaboration that contributed to the safe resolution: “We’re thankful for the teamwork of everyone involved, including the officers, school staff, and other first responders. Their quick thinking and cooperation helped bring a safe resolution.”

Both officers are participants in the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program, which is designed to equip law enforcement personnel with the skills needed to effectively handle individuals in crisis situations. Police officials emphasized the value of such training, stating, “We appreciate the CIT program and the officers who take part in it. This kind of training is an important resource that helps officers respond safely and effectively before situations escalate.”

The recognition underscores the importance of specialized training and the positive impact of collaborative efforts in critical situations.
