A 21-year-old mayor of Riverton, Mississippi, is currently under investigation by state authorities following allegations of inappropriate contact with a minor.
A spokesperson for the Mississippi State Police confirmed Thursday that its Criminal Investigation Division has launched a probe into Mayor Jordan Carter after receiving a tip from the FBI. No additional details about the investigation have been made public.
On Friday, Carter addressed the allegations in a social media post, calling the claims untrue. “My team and I are fully aware of the recent news articles circulating,” Carter wrote. “I want to speak directly and clearly to the people of Riverton: the accusations being reported are false. I am innocent. Truth matters, and in time, the truth will stand on its own.” Carter added that, on the advice of counsel, he would not provide further comment on the ongoing investigation at this time.
Carter was elected in late 2022 as the youngest Black mayor in the country, months after graduating high school. His election at age 18 made him one of the youngest mayors in the United States.
Some Riverton residents believe that Carter is facing opposition due to his age. “I don’t believe the things they say about the budget and this newest scandal. I don’t believe it. Quit trying to smear the young man, give him credit for what he is trying to do,” said longtime resident Harold Jones.
Jones noted that the city has faced years of economic decline, and believes Carter is making efforts to revitalize Riverton. “We’re a struggling city. He’s trying to improve things, but people just won’t work with him,” Jones said.
In September 2023, Carter was questioned by residents and city council members after city bills went unpaid for several months. The council ultimately approved the release of funds to settle the outstanding payments.
Despite the ongoing state investigation, some residents continue to stand by the mayor. “Wrong is wrong, right is right. If there is any wrong, then okay, deal with that. But quit bashing him for the sake of it. Like seriously, he’s not that person,” said resident Tamara Williams.
The FBI declined to confirm or deny its involvement in the investigation when contacted for comment.
