The “State of the People” tour is currently making its way across the United States, with a recent stop in Jackson, Mississippi, to engage with the African American community. Emile Washington, COO of Woke Vote, emphasized the importance of focusing on the South during this leg of the tour, stating, “Our mission really is to bring the power back to the people and remind them that they hold the power electorally, civically, morally as well as with our economic prowess.”

Local community involvement has been crucial for the success of the event, with volunteers from across the Metro area stepping up to contribute. Among them was Malik Alexander, a student at Jackson State University and member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Alexander expressed his commitment to supporting the community, saying, “We put our full effort into making sure that the community has all of the vital essentials that they need, and as well as give some love and care back.”

The event not only provided meals to those in need but also featured local voting rights organizations encouraging voter participation. Kiersten Hawkins, a Black Youth Vote Ambassador, highlighted the importance of youth involvement in elections: “Basically, I just want you to know that our vote does matter, so it doesn’t matter who you vote for. Just get out and exercise your vote.”

The NAACP’s local chapter was also present, offering hot meals and produce to attendees. Allytra Perryman, Deputy Director of the NAACP State Conference, underscored their mission: “It’s important that we magnify the voices of people who live in the community, so we are here in the Community listening to some of the concerns from the residents.”

The tour is scheduled to conclude its Jackson visit on Saturday.
