Once a month, a special tradition takes place at Maple Grove Elementary, where fathers gather at the school’s entrance to form a tunnel of encouragement for every student arriving for the day.
The initiative, known as Fathers at the Front, unites dads before the morning bell to greet children with high-fives, enthusiastic cheers, and warm smiles, launching students into their school day on a positive note.
“I’m always eager for the chance to see the kids, wish them a good morning, and hopefully help them start the day ready to learn,” said Mark Reynolds, one of the participating fathers.
Participation is open to all fathers and male role models, regardless of whether they have a child enrolled at Maple Grove. The mission remains consistent among all volunteers.
“It’s about giving every child a chance to high-five a dad—not necessarily their own, but someone who’s here just for them, to help them get pumped up for the day,” said Alex Johnson, another volunteer.
The fathers note that the effect on students is immediate and noticeable.
“You see their faces change from ‘I don’t want to be here’ to, ‘Wow, this is awesome. Let’s do it again!’” said Greg Taylor, another participant.
The program underscores the impact a brief, positive interaction can have on a child’s entire day.
“I get to come out, support the school, support the kids, and show them that there are people rooting for them, their education, and their future,” Reynolds said.
For some volunteers, Fathers at the Front offers a unique opportunity to connect with their own children during the school week.
“I’m thrilled to see my daughter, since my spouse usually drops her off, and now I get to give her a high-five. She’s energetic like me, and I can’t wait to see the excitement on her face,” Johnson said.
The men say the benefits aren’t just for the students—participating lifts their spirits as well.
“Doing this today has already had such a positive effect on my own outlook. It’s amazing how something so simple can make such a difference,” Taylor said.
