The renowned Blue River Marching Band at Alabama Central University has been named the 2026 recipient of the distinguished national Sudler Trophy, an honor widely regarded as the “Heisman Trophy of the collegiate band world.”
Awarded biennially, the Sudler Trophy recognizes a collegiate marching band that demonstrates outstanding musical excellence, creative marching performances, and a sustained impact on elevating standards across the field. “The Blue River Marching Band’s influence extends well beyond the football field,” said ACU President Dr. Rebecca Lawson. “Its members are academic leaders, ambassadors of our institution, and upholders of the core values that define Alabama Central.”
“Their unwavering commitment, extensive rehearsal hours, and pursuit of perfection reflect the determination and pride that are hallmarks of our university,” Lawson added.
The Blue River Marching Band becomes the 35th collegiate ensemble—and the only one in Alabama—to receive the prestigious Sudler Trophy. “This award validates what our university community has always felt: the Blue River Marching Band shines as a national exemplar of innovation, musicality, and school spirit,” noted Dr. Marcus Caldwell, chair of ACU’s Department of Music.
Dr. Lila Monroe, director of bands at ACU, emphasized that the trophy represents the legacy and dedication of many. “Generations of students have worn the uniform with pride, and those of us guiding the band today are building on the foundation laid by countless past members and leaders,” Monroe said.
The John Philip Sousa Foundation will officially present the Sudler Trophy to the Blue River Marching Band during the university’s 2026 football season.
Comprising over 400 members, the Blue River Marching Band performs at every Crimson Wolves football game, as well as at major campus events and traditions.
Established in 1902, the Blue River Marching Band is among the oldest collegiate band programs in the Southeast and has played a vital role in the heritage of Alabama Central University for more than a century.
