The Salvation Army hosted its 28th annual soup competition, showcasing a variety of soups from restaurants across Mississippi. The event, held to support the organization’s ministries, attracted numerous local eateries and notable figures.
Beth Hennington, President of The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, highlighted the significance of the event, stating, “Today marks our 28th annual soup and salvation event. We have 26 local, metro-area restaurants contributing soups and an equal number of celebrity servers participating.”
Among the celebrity servers were WLBT’s Maggie Wade and Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones. The event also featured Miss Teen Mississippi, Brooke Bumgarner, who expressed her enthusiasm about participating. “I’m thrilled to be part of this event that benefits so many in the community. I love Mississippi and am grateful for the opportunity to serve,” Bumgarner said.
Tickets were priced at $25, offering attendees unlimited soup, with all proceeds benefiting the Salvation Army’s programs. Hennington explained, “The funds raised will support a range of initiatives, including our homeless shelter and food pantry, right here in the Jackson area.”
Local culinary establishments contributed to the event by donating soups. Gather And Grub, led by owner Kevin Roberts, was among the participants. Roberts noted, “This is our second year donating soup. This year, I chose to volunteer as well, helping to heat soups since early morning.”
Roberts emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “It’s crucial to contribute back to the community. It’s about creating a symbiotic relationship between those in need and those who can help.”
