As the first day of summer arrives on Friday, June 20, residents are reminded to review their insurance coverage for seasonal activities such as boating, swimming, and vacationing. Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney emphasized the importance of maintaining insurance policies for motorcycles, boats, RVs, and jet skis, even during the off-season. “Keeping your coverage protects your items from damage year-round,” Chaney stated.

For those planning summer travel, travel insurance is highly recommended. Chaney highlighted that inflation has increased travel costs, making travel insurance a prudent investment to protect against potential losses from trip cancellations. Various travel insurance plans are available, including options for “cancel for any reason” and medical emergencies, as well as coverage for trip interruptions.

Travel insurance often provides a 24-hour assistance line for emergencies, offering services such as finding medical help, arranging accommodations, and contacting family members.

Summer activities may also involve renting cars, and travelers are advised to carefully consider rental insurance options. Key steps include examining the cost of rental insurance, understanding credit card coverage, reviewing personal auto policies, identifying any coverage gaps, and consulting with an insurance agent.

Homeowners considering installing a pool or those who already have one should also be aware of specific insurance considerations. Some insurance companies may require safety measures, such as fences or pool covers, to provide coverage. Homeowners should ensure their policy includes adequate personal liability coverage in case of accidents. Additionally, while in-ground pools are typically covered under homeowners policies as part of the home, above-ground pools may require additional coverage as they are considered personal property. Prompt repair of any leaks is advised to prevent water damage, as gradual leaks are often not covered.

Residents are encouraged to discuss these considerations with their insurance agents to ensure comprehensive coverage during the summer season.
